 Advice Bureau helps to navigate bureaucracy 

Hurdle 1: ID & Birth Certificate. Funding at tertiary level from NSFAS (the National Student Financial Aid Scheme) is not available for students without ID numbers.  Birth Certificates are required to obtain the ID.  Not all students have their birth  certificates and some may never have had their births registered.   The process to obtain an ID once the birth certificate is available can take up to 3 years.

 
Hurdle 2: NSFAS funding requires a bank account which requires an ID which requires a birth certificate.  Not all children born in rural communities have birth certificates. No bank account = no NSFAS funding.

Schools Fund helps to feed and clothe the most needy

Hurdle 3 Even when you are receiving poor education in under-resourced and dilapidated schools, with no school uniform you cannot attend school.
 
Hurdle 4: If your belly is empty you cannot focus on lessons.  Schools Fund assists in extreme cases with food parcels, and Advice Bureau helps parents and guardians to access grants that are rightfully theirs.  
 

 

 

 

 

 

 

CAO Project helps the brightest to find their way

Hurdle 5: Lack of guidance leading to unsuitable matric subject choices. 
 
Hurdle 6: Lack of guidance in completing the tertiary education application form. 
 
Hurdle 7: Tertiary Education Application Fee. 
 

 

 
 

Tertiary Fund helps to ensure success

Hurdle 8: Costs associated with the tertiary institution registration process e.g. transport, data and acceptance fee.
 
Hurdle 9: Tertiary Education Registration Fee, if not covered by NSFAS.   
 
Hurdle 10: NSFAS Eligibility. Even if eligible NSFAS funding is not always available due to under-resourcing by government.
 
Hurdle 11: Learning computer skills whilst studying for tertiary qualification (under-resourced high schools have no computers).
 
Hurdle 12: Costs of food, transport or accommodation often must be covered by part-time work which means less study time.
